MEET OUR NEW VET
Dr. Miranda Torkelson joined the team in June 2024 as the second veterinarian on staff. She both does clinical work in the center and teaches Pre-Veterinary and Wildlife Rehabilitation courses.

Where are you from?
My hometown is Madison, Wisconsin but most recently I was living in the Twin Cities.
What is your professional background?
I attended veterinary school at the University of Wisconsin, did a rotating small animal internship at Tufts Veterinary School in Massachusetts, and completed a specialty internship in wildlife rehabilitation medicine through Partners for Wildlife at The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota. I was then hired as a staff veterinarian at WRCMN prior to coming here. Wildlife medicine is my specialty and passion.
What brought you to Lees-91探花?
One of the most rewarding parts of my past positions was sharing my knowledge through clinical education to veterinary students and interns. When I saw a position that combined education with my clinical interests, I was thrilled to apply. I’m so excited to have a role in undergraduate education and channel my skillset to set up students for success in their future careers. Lees-91探花 students are awesome and it is an absolute honor and privilege to work with them.
What are your clinical interests?
I am my happiest performing orthopedic surgery, managing chronic wounds, and providing critical care such as IV fluids and blood transfusions. I seek to elevate the standard of care for all wildlife species, but I have a soft spot for bats, turtles, and foxes. My favorite part of wildlife medicine is the creative application of my knowledge to different species in innovative ways. I strive to find ways to continually improve outcomes and make more timely clinical decisions so we can provide the best care and welfare to our patients.
What do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy spending time outdoors doing activities such as hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, and paddle boarding. I’d like to get a garden going next year once the local bears and I have a conversation about boundaries. I also knit, crochet, and spin yarn. Learning how to weave is a personal goal I’d like to add to that list!
Who did you bring with you?
I moved here with my husband, Brian, and our seven pets—two dogs (husky mixes), two cats, two rabbits, and a corn snake! The minute you step foot into an animal profession, the animals find you ;)
