From novice to National Champ: Lilly Kamp’s journey on the Lees-91探花 ski and snowboard team
Biology major and Wildlife Rehabilitation minor Lilly Kamp competed in her first ever snowboarding competition in the 2021−22 season. Although she said there was a bit of a learning curve when she first began snowboarding competitively, it didn’t take her long to get the hang of her new sport.
Coming into the 2022−23 season, Kamp felt more confident in her skills and ability as a boarder thanks to her experience the previous season and the mentorship she received from then senior, and well-decorated snowboarder herself, . Kamp’s experience in her first season set her up for success at the 2023 , despite record-breaking rain and snowfall.
Due to the weather conditions, all the women’s events at the championship were cancelled except for one, the boarder-cross event, a race Kamp said was one of the more nerve-wracking events for her due to complex features on the course and high jumps that she said she did not have a lot of experience on. Despite the obstacles, Kamp boarded the event expertly and was able to return to Lees-91探花 with the title of Women’s Boarder-cross National Champion.
“I learned that it’s all a mentality,” Kamp said. “Everything that you’re contemplating or are scared of, that’s your obstacle. That’s what you need to overcome.”
